Voir vs regarder in French: see or look at

Use voir when sight happens: you see a person, a place, a film, a problem, or something in front of you. Use regarder when you look at or watch something on purpose. Je vois un oiseau means “I see a bird”; je regarde l’oiseau means “I’m looking at the bird” or “I’m watching the bird”.

Voir is broad. It can mean “to see” with your eyes, “to see” a person, or “to understand/notice” in some contexts.

Je vois une lumière au loin.
I see a light in the distance.

Tu vois le problème ?
Do you see the problem?

In everyday planning, voir quelqu’un can mean “to see / meet someone”: je vois mon frère demain.

Regarder: look at or watch

Regarder is intentional. You direct your eyes and attention toward something.

Regarde le tableau.
Look at the board.

Nous regardons un film ce soir.
We’re watching a film tonight.

Unlike English “look at”, French regarder usually takes a direct object. Do not add à: regarder la télé, not regarder à la télé.

Film, TV and shows

For watching TV, a film, a video or a match, use regarder.

Elle regarde une série en français.
She is watching a series in French.

You may hear voir un film when the idea is “to see a film” as an experience: j’ai vu ce film. But for the action of watching, regarder is the safer learner choice.

Using voir for intentional watching

When you choose to watch something, use regarder.

Je vois la télé. -> Je regarde la télé.
I’m watching TV.

Adding à after regarder

Regarder takes a direct object.

Regarde à cette photo. -> Regarde cette photo.
Look at this photo.

Using regarder for accidental sight

If the point is that something is visible, use voir.

Je regarde une lumière au loin. -> Je vois une lumière au loin.
I see a light in the distance.
