Dates in French: days, months and how to say the date
To say a date in French, use le + number + month: le 14 juillet (“July
14”). The first day of the month is the exception: say le premier (“the
first”), not le un. Days and months are written in lowercase in normal
sentences: lundi, janvier, le 3 avril.

How to ask for the date
The most practical question is Quelle est la date ? (“What is the date?”). You can answer with nous sommes le… or the more conversational on est le….
Quelle est la date aujourd’hui ? — Nous sommes le 12 mars.
What is the date today? — It is March 12.
For the day of the week, ask Quel jour sommes-nous ?
Quel jour sommes-nous ? — Nous sommes mardi.
What day is it? — It is Tuesday.
Use le before the date
French normally puts le before a full date. English can say “April 3” without
“the”, but French keeps the article.
Mon anniversaire est le 3 avril.
My birthday is April 3.
When you add the day of the week, the day comes first: lundi 3 avril. You do not need a comma in the French version.
Premier is only for the first
French dates use ordinary cardinal numbers after the first: le 2, le 3, le 14. Only the first day uses an ordinal form.
Le premier janvier est un jour férié.
January 1 is a public holiday.Le 2 janvier, je travaille.
On January 2, I work.
Common mistakes
Capitalizing days and months
French days and months are common nouns, so they stay lowercase inside a sentence.
Je pars en Avril.→ Je pars en avril.
I am leaving in April.
Using an ordinal for every date
After the first, use normal numbers.
le deuxième juin→ le 2 juin
June 2
Adding de before the month
In the everyday date pattern, French says le 3 avril, not le 3 de avril.
Mon anniversaire est le 3 de avril.→ Mon anniversaire est le 3 avril.
My birthday is April 3.
Dates combine small pieces: numbers, days, months and time words. Fluera practices them in short planning sentences like je pars lundi and mon anniversaire est le 3 avril, so the date format becomes a phrase you can say quickly. Try it when you practice French.
