Spanish numbers 100 to 1000: hundreds made simple

To form Spanish numbers from 100 to 1000, learn the hundreds and then add the smaller number directly: doscientos treinta (230), cuatrocientos ocho (408), novecientos noventa y nueve (999). Use cien for exactly 100 and before a noun when the total is exactly 100; use ciento from 101 through 199.

Spanish does not put y between the hundreds and the tens. The conjunction appears only inside numbers 31–99, between a ten and a unit: ciento treinta y dos, not ciento y treinta y dos. Three irregular hundreds need special attention: 500 is quinientos, 700 is setecientos, and 900 is novecientos.

These eleven building blocks cover the whole range. The rest of the work is combining them with the familiar numbers below 100 and adjusting gender when a hundred directly counts a feminine noun.

Cien for 100, ciento after 100

Use cien when the number is exactly 100. It stays cien before both masculine and feminine nouns.

cien libros / cien páginas
one hundred books / one hundred pages

As soon as another number follows, change cien to ciento: ciento uno (101), ciento diez (110), ciento noventa y nueve (199). Do not insert y after ciento.

El hotel tiene ciento cinco habitaciones.
The hotel has one hundred and five rooms.

English normally says “one hundred and five,” while standard Spanish simply places the pieces together: ciento cinco. That difference explains two common errors at once: cien cinco uses the wrong form, and ciento y cinco adds a conjunction where Spanish does not need one.

In percentages, exactly 100 is also cien: cien por ciento (one hundred percent). Higher compounds use ciento, as in ciento diez por ciento.

The regular and irregular hundreds

Most hundreds are recognizable combinations of a number and cientos: doscientos, trescientos, cuatrocientos, seiscientos and ochocientos. They are written as one word, not as dos cientos or ocho cientos.

Three forms are irregular enough to memorize:

The spelling of 300 is trescientos; do not drop the s and write trecientos. Reading these forms in prices, distances and dates helps them become visual chunks rather than calculations.

La entrada cuesta quinientos pesos.
The ticket costs five hundred pesos.

El viaje es de setecientos kilómetros.
The trip is seven hundred kilometers.

Build any number in three steps

Start with the hundred, add the tens, then add y plus the unit only when the last two digits require it.

Number Build it Spanish form
204 200 + 4 doscientos cuatro
350 300 + 50 trescientos cincuenta
481 400 + 80 + 1 cuatrocientos ochenta y uno
716 700 + 16 setecientos dieciséis
999 900 + 90 + 9 novecientos noventa y nueve

Notice that y occurs in 481 and 999 because the final pieces are ochenta y uno and noventa y nueve. There is no y after the hundred. Numbers such as 216 use the single word dieciséis, and numbers such as 725 use the single word veinticinco.

Mi número de habitación es el cuatrocientos ocho.
My room number is four hundred eight.

Room numbers, bus routes and addresses may be read in local ways, but the full cardinal form above is always understandable and gives you the core system.

When writing a compound, keep every hundred as one word and the smaller pieces in their normal form. That means 642 is seiscientos cuarenta y dos: one word for 600, one word for 40, then y dos. Existing accent marks remain in the smaller number, as in doscientos veintidós (222) and setecientos dieciséis (716). You do not add a new accent simply because the number is longer.

Zeroes in the middle do not need a spoken placeholder. Say ochocientos cinco for 805, not a version with cero. Likewise, 860 is ochocientos sesenta; the final zero only means there is no unit to add. Breaking a written number into hundreds, tens and units before speaking is a dependable way to avoid inserting extra words.

Hundreds agree with feminine nouns

From 200 upward, the hundreds behave like adjectives and agree with the noun’s gender: doscientos libros but doscientas páginas. The same change applies to all the hundreds, including irregular ones: quinientas personas, setecientas casas, novecientas entradas.

La biblioteca tiene trescientas sillas.
The library has three hundred chairs.

Vendieron ochocientas entradas.
They sold eight hundred tickets.

Cien and ciento do not change for gender: cien alumnos, cien alumnas, ciento una personas. Within a compound ending in one, uno becomes un before a masculine noun and una before a feminine noun: quinientos un libros, quinientas una páginas.

From 999 to mil

One thousand is simply mil, normally without un: mil euros, mil personas. The form does not change for gender and does not take a plural s when counting exact thousands: dos mil, tres mil.

El pueblo tiene mil habitantes.
The town has one thousand inhabitants.

For 1,001 and beyond, add the rest directly: mil uno, mil cien, mil doscientos treinta. The same y rule continues to apply only between tens and units: mil novecientos ochenta y cuatro.

Common mistakes

Keeping cien in a compound

Use ciento whenever 100 is followed by another number.

cien ocho → ciento ocho
one hundred eight

Adding y after the hundred

Spanish does not mirror English “hundred and.”

doscientos y cuarenta → doscientos cuarenta
two hundred forty

Forgetting feminine agreement

Hundreds from 200 upward agree with a following feminine noun.

cuatrocientos páginas → cuatrocientas páginas
four hundred pages

Review the foundation in Spanish numbers 1 to 100, then use these hundreds in prices, distances and quantities. Fluera gives you number choices inside useful sentences when you practice Spanish, so you learn both the form and the noun agreement around it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cien and ciento?
Use cien for exactly 100: cien euros. Use ciento when another number follows: ciento uno, ciento veinte, ciento noventa y nueve.
Do you put y after hundreds in Spanish?
No. Join the hundred directly to what follows: doscientos cuarenta, not doscientos y cuarenta. Use y only between tens and units, as in doscientos cuarenta y tres.
Which Spanish hundreds are irregular?
The three key irregular forms are quinientos (500), setecientos (700) and novecientos (900). Also remember the correct spelling trescientos for 300.
Why is it doscientas personas instead of doscientos personas?
Hundreds from 200 to 900 agree with a following noun. Personas is feminine, so use doscientas personas; with a masculine noun, use doscientos libros.
How do you say 1,000 in Spanish?
Say mil, normally without un: mil personas. Exact multiples are dos mil, tres mil and so on, with no plural s on mil.
How do you say 999 in Spanish?
It is novecientos noventa y nueve: novecientos for 900, then noventa y nueve for 99. There is no y between the hundred and the tens.
