Months of the year in Spanish: enero to diciembre
The twelve months in Spanish are enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo,
junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre and diciembre.
Most are close cousins of their English names, so they are quick to learn. Two
habits set them apart from English: the months are lowercase (enero, not
Enero, even mid-sentence) and none of them carry a written accent.
To say something happens in a month, Spanish uses en: en enero (in January).
Below are all twelve with audio, then the sections cover that “in a month” pattern
and how to build a date like el 5 de mayo.

The twelve months
Going through the year, they are enero (January), febrero (February), marzo
(March), abril (April), mayo (May), junio (June), julio (July), agosto
(August), septiembre (September), octubre (October), noviembre (November) and
diciembre (December). All are masculine, so if you ever need an article it is el
(el próximo enero, next January).
Mi cumpleaños es en marzo.
My birthday is in March.
Note that they stay lowercase, just like the days of the week. You only capitalize a month when it starts a sentence, exactly as with any other word.
Saying “in” a month
To place an event in a month, use en + the month. There is no article and no
extra word.
Nos casamos en junio.
We’re getting married in June.En agosto hace mucho calor.
In August it’s very hot.Las clases empiezan en septiembre.
Classes start in September.
If you want to sound a little more formal, you can say en el mes de + month, as in
en el mes de octubre (in the month of October), but plain en octubre is the
everyday choice.
Dates: el 5 de mayo
A Spanish date links the day number, the month and often the year with de. The
pattern is el + number + de + month (+ de + year): el 5 de mayo, el 12 de
octubre de 2025. The day comes before the month, the reverse of American
usage.
Hoy es el 3 de abril.
Today is the 3rd of April.La reunión es el 20 de septiembre.
The meeting is on the 20th of September.
The year is read as a whole number, not in pairs of digits: mil novecientos noventa
for 1990, not “nineteen ninety”.
Use ordinary counting numbers for the day, not ordinals: el dos de mayo, not el
segundo de mayo. The one common exception is the first of the month, where you may
hear either el uno or el primero de enero.
To ask or give today’s date, Spanish uses estar: ¿A cuánto estamos? or ¿Qué
fecha es hoy? for “what’s the date?”, answered with Estamos a 5 de mayo or
Hoy es 5 de mayo.
Next month, last month
To move around the calendar you pair mes (month) with a few set expressions rather
than a single word. “Next month” is el mes que viene or el próximo mes, and
“last month” is el mes pasado.
El mes que viene voy a España.
Next month I’m going to Spain.Empecé el curso el mes pasado.
I started the course last month.
For a rough point inside a month, use a principios de (at the beginning of), a
mediados de (in the middle of) or a finales de (at the end of).
El festival es a finales de julio.
The festival is at the end of July.
And to say something must happen by a certain month, use para: para diciembre
(by December).
El proyecto tiene que estar listo para marzo.
The project has to be ready by March.
Common mistakes
Capitalizing the month
Spanish months are common nouns, so they stay lowercase in the middle of a sentence.
Nací en Julio.→ Nací en julio.
I was born in July.
Adding an accent
None of the months carry a written accent, so do not add one to words like
septiembre or agosto.
agósto, septiémbre→ agosto, septiembre.
August, September.
Using an ordinal in a date
Days in a date use plain numbers, not ordinals like segundo or tercero.
el segundo de mayo→ el dos de mayo.
the 2nd of May.
Months come up constantly in real plans — birthdays, holidays, appointments — which
is exactly how they stick. In Fluera you practice them inside sentences like mi
cumpleaños es en marzo and nos vemos en junio, so en enero and el 5 de mayo
come out without stopping to translate. Put your own year into Spanish when you
practice Spanish, and pair the months with
Spanish numbers 1–100 for full dates.
