Mejor vs más bueno in Spanish: how to say better

For almost every normal “better” sentence, use mejor. It is the comparative of both bueno (good) and bien (well): un plan mejor, habla mejor, es mejor que antes. Más bueno exists, but it is narrow: it usually means “kinder,” “more good-natured,” or an emphatic/colloquial kind of goodness, not the standard comparative “better.”

The safe learner rule is: if English says better, choose mejor.

Mejor is the normal comparative

Use mejor when one thing is better than another, or better than before. It can describe a noun.

Este plan es mejor que el otro.
This plan is better than the other one.

Necesitamos una mejor solución.
We need a better solution.

It can also describe how an action is done.

Ahora entiendo mejor.
Now I understand better.

Ella canta mejor que yo.
She sings better than I do.

El mejor means the best

With the article, mejor becomes “the best.” It still agrees only through the article and noun around it.

Es el mejor día de mi vida.
It is the best day of my life.

Esta es la mejor opción.
This is the best option.

For plural nouns, use the plural article: los mejores, las mejores.

Más bueno is limited

Más bueno is possible when bueno means kind, good-natured, well-behaved, or sometimes tasty/appealing in colloquial speech. It does not replace mejor for a normal comparison of quality, performance, or usefulness.

Mi hermano es más bueno de lo que parece.
My brother is kinder than he seems.

For a plan, answer, restaurant, grade, skill, or result, use mejor.
