Bueno vs bien in Spanish: good or well?
Use bueno when you need an adjective meaning “good”. It describes a noun and
changes form: bueno, buena, buenos, buenas, and buen before a
masculine singular noun. Use bien when you need an adverb meaning “well” or
a fixed response meaning “fine”; it does not change.
| Form | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
bueno / buena / buen |
adjective: describes a noun | Es un buen libro. It’s a good book. |
bien |
adverb or fixed state: well, fine, okay | Habla bien. Estoy bien.He speaks well. I’m fine. |
Bueno describes nouns
Bueno works like other Spanish adjectives: it agrees with the noun.
El café es bueno.
The coffee is good.La película es buena.
The movie is good.
Before a masculine singular noun, bueno shortens to buen:
Es un buen día.
It is a good day.
Bien describes actions or states
Use bien to say that an action is done well.
Hablas español muy bien.
You speak Spanish very well.
Bien also appears with estar to mean fine, okay or all right.
Estoy bien, gracias.
I’m fine, thank you.
Because bien is not an adjective that agrees with a noun, it stays the same:
muy bien, not muy buena unless you are describing a feminine noun.
Es bueno vs está bien
Es bueno says something is good as a quality. Esta bien says something is
fine, okay, acceptable or in a good state.
Este plan es bueno.
This plan is good.Este plan está bien.
This plan is fine / okay.
That contrast is one reason ser and estar matter here too.
Common mistakes
Using bueno after a verb action
Actions take the adverb bien.

Using bien before a noun
A noun needs the adjective form.
Es un bien restaurante.→ Es un buen restaurante.
It is a good restaurant.
Forgetting agreement
Bueno changes to match the noun it describes.
La sopa es bueno.→ La sopa es buena.
The soup is good.
