Por vs para in Spanish: the practical difference
Both por and para can translate as “for”, but they point in different
directions. Use para when the sentence looks forward to a goal: purpose,
destination, recipient, deadline or intended use. Use por when the sentence
looks around or backward: cause, exchange, route, duration, means or the person
who did an action.
| Use | Think | Example |
|---|---|---|
para |
goal, endpoint, purpose | Es para mi hermano. It’s for my brother. |
por |
reason, route, exchange, means | Gracias por la ayuda. Thanks for the help. |
Para points to a goal
Use para when something is moving toward an endpoint, literally or
figuratively.
Salimos para Madrid mañana.
We leave for Madrid tomorrow.Este regalo es para ti.
This gift is for you.
Para also marks purpose or intended use:
Estudio para aprender español.
I study in order to learn Spanish.Necesito una mesa para trabajar.
I need a table for working.
And it marks a deadline:
El informe es para el viernes.
The report is for Friday / due by Friday.
Por explains cause, route and exchange
Use por when you explain why something happened, what path it passed through
or what was exchanged.
Gracias por tu mensaje.
Thanks for your message.Caminamos por el parque.
We walked through the park.Pagué veinte euros por el libro.
I paid twenty euros for the book.
Por also appears with means or communication:
Hablamos por teléfono.
We talked by phone.
The “for + person” trap
English “for you” can be either por ti or para ti, depending on the meaning.
Lo hice para ti.
I made it for you. (you are the recipient)Lo hice por ti.
I did it because of you / for your sake. (you are the reason)
If the person receives the thing, choose para. If the person is the reason,
choose por.
Common mistakes
Translating every “for” as para
When “for” gives a reason, Spanish normally uses por.
Gracias para venir.→ Gracias por venir.
Thanks for coming.
Using por for a deadline
A due date is an endpoint, so it takes para.
Necesito el documento por mañana.→ Necesito el documento para mañana.
I need the document for tomorrow.
Using para for an exchange
When money, time or effort is exchanged for something, use por.
Pagué cinco euros para el café.→ Pagué cinco euros por el café.
I paid five euros for the coffee.
If you are also working on ser vs estar, notice the same habit: do not start from the English word; start from the job the Spanish word is doing. Fluera turns that into short choices with immediate feedback, so you can practice Spanish by reading the situation first and choosing the form second.
