Drinks and café basics
Eau starts with a vowel sound, so you usually see it with l' or d': l'eau,
un verre d'eau. Coffee and tea are masculine: un café, un thé.
Je voudrais un café et un verre d’eau.
I would like a coffee and a glass of water.
In a café, un café often means a small black coffee unless you specify something
else.
Manger and boire
Use manger for eating and boire for drinking.
Je mange du pain. Elle boit du thé.
I eat bread. She drinks tea.
When you talk about an unspecified amount of food or drink, French often uses
partitive articles like du, de la and de l': du pain, de l’eau.
Common mistakes
Saying “le eau”
Before a vowel, le becomes l'.
le eau→ l’eau
water
Treating pain as English “pain”
French pain means bread and is pronounced with a nasal vowel.
Je voudrais du pain.
I would like some bread.
Using nourriture for every meal
Nourriture means food in general. For a specific meal, use the meal word:
petit-déjeuner, déjeuner or dîner.
Le dîner est très bon.
Dinner is very good.
These words lead naturally into ordering. Once the basic food and drink words are clear, the next step is using them in French restaurant phrases. In Fluera you learn the word, hear it, and place it inside short café sentences so it becomes usable, not just recognizable. Try it when you practice French.
