Spanish house vocabulary: rooms, furniture and home words

The core words to start with are la casa (house), el hogar (home), la habitación (room), la cocina (kitchen) and el baño (bathroom). With these you can already talk about where you live and which part of the house you mean.

Below are the everyday house and home words, with their gender, an example sentence and audio. After the list, the sections explain the rooms, the furniture, and how the articles el and la work with these nouns.

Rooms in the house

The most common rooms are la cocina (kitchen), el baño (bathroom) and el jardín (garden). A room in general is la habitación; in everyday Spanish you will also hear el cuarto, especially for a bedroom.

La cocina es grande y el baño es pequeño.
The kitchen is big and the bathroom is small.

Los niños juegan en el jardín.
The children play in the garden.

Mi habitación tiene una ventana grande.
My room has a big window.

Furniture and things

For furniture and the things around the house, the key words are la mesa (table), la silla (chair), la cama (bed), la puerta (door), la ventana (window) and la llave (key).

La mesa y las sillas están en la cocina.
The table and the chairs are in the kitchen.

Cierra la puerta y la ventana, por favor.
Close the door and the window, please.

Las llaves están sobre la mesa.
The keys are on the table.

Gender and articles

Most house words are feminine (la), but a few common ones are masculine (el), so the article is worth learning with each noun. The same el/la choice you sort out with el vs la applies to casa and cama.

Word Gender Article
casa (house) feminine la casa
cocina (kitchen) feminine la cocina
habitación (room) feminine la habitación
pared (wall) feminine la pared
baño (bathroom) masculine el baño
jardín (garden) masculine el jardín
suelo (floor) masculine el suelo

One useful detail: for “at home” Spanish drops the article and says en casa, but for a specific room it keeps it, as in en la cocina (in the kitchen) or en el baño (in the bathroom).

Estoy en casa, en la cocina.
I’m at home, in the kitchen.

Common mistakes

Using hogar for the building

Hogar is home as a feeling or household; for the physical building you buy or rent, use casa.

Compré un hogar nuevo. → Compré una casa nueva.
I bought a new house.

Saying “en la casa” for “at home”

To say you are at home, drop the article: en casa. En la casa points inside one specific house instead.

Estoy en la casa. → Estoy en casa.
I’m at home.

Mismatching the article gender

Baño is masculine, so it takes el, while casa, cocina and habitación are feminine and take la.

la baño → el baño
the bathroom

In Fluera you meet each house word in a short sentence, hear how it is pronounced, and place it inside phrases like estoy en casa or la mesa está en la cocina, so the rooms and furniture stick instead of staying a flat list. Try it when you practice Spanish and turn these words into sentences you can actually say.
