Spanish airport vocabulary: check-in, security and boarding

At a Spanish-speaking airport you can get a long way with a handful of core words: el aeropuerto (the airport), el vuelo (the flight), el billete or el boleto (the ticket), el pasaporte (the passport) and la maleta (the suitcase). Everything else builds on these as you move from the entrance to the gate.

This guide follows the journey through the terminal. Below are the building blocks, including a few general travel words like el mapa and la estación that you will hear around any trip, not just at the airport.

At check-in

Your first stop is the desk where you drop your bags. The verb for handing over a checked bag is facturar, and the desk itself is el mostrador. You decide what goes in the hold as la maleta and what stays with you as el equipaje de mano.

For the ticket itself, Spain usually says el billete, while most of Latin America says el boleto. Both are understood everywhere, so pick one and stick with it.

Security and boarding

After check-in you go through el control de seguridad. To board the plane is embarcar, you do it at la puerta de embarque, and you need la tarjeta de embarque to get through.

Tengo que pasar el control de seguridad antes de embarcar.
I have to go through security before boarding.

Arrivals and departures

The terminal splits into las salidas (departures) and las llegadas (arrivals). When you land, you head to baggage claim, which in Spanish is the action recoger el equipaje.

Mi vuelo está en la pantalla de salidas, puerta 14.
My flight is on the departures board, gate 14.

Después de aterrizar, vamos a recoger el equipaje.
After landing, we are going to pick up our luggage.

Common mistakes

Using registrarse to check in a bag

At an airport, “to check in” your luggage is facturar. Here it does not mean “to invoice”, and registrarse (to register / sign up) is the wrong verb for a bag.

Quiero registrarme la maleta. → Quiero facturar la maleta.
I want to check in my suitcase.

Making equipaje plural

Equipaje is uncountable in Spanish, so there is no plural equipajes. Use mucho equipaje for “a lot of luggage”.

Tengo muchos equipajes. → Tengo mucho equipaje.
I have a lot of luggage.

Confusing salida with llegada

Salida means departure (and also “exit”), while llegada means arrival. Don’t swap them when you read the boards.

Busco la pantalla de salidas para ver mi vuelo que llega. → Busco la pantalla de llegadas para ver mi vuelo que llega.
I’m looking for the arrivals board to see my incoming flight.

The airport words stick best once you say them in the moment, not just read them.
