Pedir vs preguntar in Spanish: two ways to ask

English uses “ask” for two different actions. Spanish separates them. Use preguntar when you ask a question or ask for information. Use pedir when you ask for a thing, request help, order food or ask someone to do something.

Preguntar is for questions

Use preguntar when the result you want is an answer or information.

El estudiante pregunta mucho.
The student asks a lot of questions.

Pregunté dónde estaba la estación.
I asked where the station was.

With a person, Spanish often uses an indirect object:

Le pregunté a Ana si venía.
I asked Ana whether she was coming.

Pedir is for requests

Use pedir when you want someone to give you something or do something.

Pedí ayuda.
I asked for help.

Vamos a pedir la cuenta.
We are going to ask for the bill.

In a restaurant, pedir also means “to order”:

Pedí una sopa y un café.
I ordered a soup and a coffee.

Ask someone to do something

When the request is an action, use pedir with a structure like pedirle a alguien que…

Le pedí a mi hermano que me llamara.
I asked my brother to call me.

This is different from asking him a question:

Le pregunté a mi hermano dónde estaba.
I asked my brother where he was.

Common mistakes

Using preguntar for an object

If you are asking for a thing, favor or service, use pedir.

Pregunté un café. → Pedí un café.
I ordered a coffee.

Using pedir for a question

If the object is a question or information, use preguntar.

Quiero pedir una pregunta. → Quiero hacer una pregunta. / Quiero preguntar algo.
I want to ask a question.

Forgetting pedir can mean order

At a restaurant, pedir is the normal verb for ordering food or drinks.

¿Qué vas a pedir?
What are you going to order?
