Use hola for a general “hello” at any time of day. Use buenos días for “good morning,” especially when you want to sound a little more polite, complete, or time-specific. In the morning you can also combine them: Hola, buenos días.

Hola works any time

Hola is the everyday word for “hello.” It works with friends, classmates, coworkers, shop staff, and people you have just met. It does not depend on the clock.

By itself, hola can sound brief, but it is not rude. It is simply the broadest greeting.

Buenos días is a morning greeting

Buenos días means “good morning.” Use it from the start of the day until around midday. It is especially natural when you enter a shop, arrive at work, start a class, or greet someone you do not know well.
