Ne… rien in French: how to say nothing or not anything

Ne… rien means “nothing” or “not anything”. It replaces pas in the negative frame: ne before the verb and rien after it. Je comprends becomes Je ne comprends rien (“I don’t understand anything”). In the passé composé, rien goes after the helper: je n’ai rien compris.

Rien replaces pas

Do not use pas and rien together in the basic negative. Rien already carries the “nothing / not anything” meaning.

Je ne dis rien.
I’m not saying anything.

Il ne sait rien.
He doesn’t know anything.

The English translation can be “nothing” or “not anything”; the French structure is the same.

In the past: rien goes after the helper

In compound tenses, place rien after the helper verb, before the participle.

Je n’ai rien acheté.
I didn’t buy anything.

Elle n’a rien dit.
She said nothing.

This is different from many English word orders, so learn it as one chunk: n’ai rien vu, n’a rien dit, n’avons rien compris.

Rien can be the subject

When “nothing” is the subject of the sentence, French starts with rien, then uses ne before the verb.

Rien ne marche.
Nothing works.

Rien n’est facile au début.
Nothing is easy at the beginning.

Here there is no second negative word after the verb because rien is already at the front.

Common mistakes

Adding pas with rien

In standard French, do not stack pas with rien for the basic meaning.

Je ne vois pas rien. → Je ne vois rien.
I don’t see anything.

Putting rien after the participle

In the passé composé, rien goes after the helper.

Je n’ai vu rien. → Je n’ai rien vu.
I didn’t see anything.

Forgetting ne when rien is the subject

When rien starts the sentence, the verb still takes ne.

Rien marche. → Rien ne marche.
Nothing works.
