Meilleur vs mieux in French: better adjective or better adverb

Use meilleur when “better” describes a noun: un meilleur film (“a better film”). Use mieux when “better” describes a verb, action, or whole situation: je comprends mieux (“I understand better”). The shortcut is: meilleur is the comparative of bon; mieux is the comparative of bien.

Meilleur describes nouns

Meilleur behaves like an adjective, so it agrees with the noun: meilleur, meilleure, meilleurs, meilleures.

C’est une meilleure idée.
That’s a better idea.

Nous avons trouvé de meilleurs billets.
We found better tickets.

If you could use bon/bonne/bons/bonnes, the “better” form is usually meilleur.

Mieux describes verbs or the result

Mieux does not agree. It describes how something is done or how a situation is.
