En vs dans in French: two meanings of in for time

For time, en tells you how long something takes to complete. Dans tells you how long from now before something happens. Je finis en deux heures means “I finish it in two hours” as a duration. Je pars dans deux heures means “I leave in two hours” from now.

En answers “how long does it take?”

Use en when you measure the time needed to finish an action.

Elle fait le trajet en trente minutes.
She does the trip in thirty minutes.

J’ai appris cette chanson en deux jours.
I learned this song in two days.

The action is completed within that amount of time.

Dans answers “how long from now?”

Use dans when the event is in the future and you are counting from now.

Le train arrive dans dix minutes.
The train arrives in ten minutes.

Nous partons dans trois jours.
We’re leaving in three days.

Dans points to the waiting time before the event starts.

En also appears with calendar periods

French often uses en with months, years, and many seasons:

en avril, en 2026, en hiver
in April, in 2026, in winter

This is a different use from the duration rule, but it is common enough to learn early. For countries, en also appears with many feminine country names, as in en France.

Common mistakes

Using dans for duration

If the sentence says how long the task takes, use en.

Je fais l’exercice dans cinq minutes. → Je fais l’exercice en cinq minutes.
I do the exercise in five minutes. (it takes five minutes)

Using en for a future delay

If the event starts after a wait from now, use dans.

Je pars en cinq minutes. → Je pars dans cinq minutes.
I’m leaving in five minutes.

Forgetting that in has several French translations

English “in” also translates as à, dans, or en for places, depending on the noun.

Je suis dans la cuisine. Je vais en France.
I’m in the kitchen. I’m going to France.
